Dogs are always called "man's best friend". Dogs are great companions and loveable goofballs, so we can easily understand where the phrase came from. However, what exactly is a dog's role as man's best friend? Certainly it's better than the role of cats...
Dogs' role toward humans is definitely one of sacrifice. When asked which animal one would rather be, a dog or a cat, the likely answer is a cat. Why? Beause dogs live constantly sacrificing themselves and their pleasures for their humans. And the natural tendency of people is to live for themselves, not for others. So dogs, in serving their humans every day, do what their humans struggle with. There is so much to learn from these beloved tail-waggers!
Another purpose of dogs other than to serve their humans is to give their owners joy. With their sweet innocence, utter loyalty and goofy, unique personalities, dogs are incredibly easy to love and can very easily provide joy for many. Smiling and prancing around, dogs provide relief from the busy, often hectic lives of numerous people, unknowingly placing laughter and happiness in many people's hearts. Dogs may not solve all the sadness and craziness in people's lives, but they definitely help.
Why can dogs help so much, then? Why are they so loveable? Because they're with us every step of the way. They leave pawprints on our hearts, in our lives forever because of every step they took with us, every time they forgave us, every smile they gave when all we could do on our own was frown. Even when gone from our lives, our dogs will still love us, still smile in our minds, still be with us every step of the way---because dogs are loyal, dogs are loving, and dogs understand. When we have no loyal friends, a dog will be that missing bestie. When few seem to care, a dog will love you with all its gentle heart can muster. When no one understands, a dog will search your soul and know: and you will know that whatever happens, that dog will be there for you. No matter what the size of the dog, you can know that dog's heart is larger. No matter how many tears you shed, you know with a bat of the paw and merry swish of the tail, that dog will wipe them away.
