There are hundreds of languages around the world,
But a dog's smile speaks them all.

A hardy, gentle, breed, Bernese Mountain Dogs are fluffy, easy-going giants that make the ideal teddy bear. Lovable and loyal companions, Berners were originally bred in the canton of Bern in Switzerland, descendants of Swiss farm dogs and Roman mastiffs. Four breeds, dubbed the Sennenhund type, emerged from this general pairing, Bernese Mountain Dogs being one of the largest of the four. Distinctive with tricolor markings, the Berner is a striking dog with muscular, thick features. Normally, Bernese will have thick fur, sometimes curly or wavy, and hefty weight, with females weighing on average seventy to eighty pounds and males weighing eighty punds or more. Bernese Mountain Dogs were once favored as farm dogs in Switzerland and completed a variety of farm chores from herding, guarding, and cart-pulling. But more than that they are known for just being loyal pets. Because of their patience and calm nature, Bernese have maintained a top position as a favorite breed.

Once a Berner owner, always a Berner owner.

Berners shed a good deal, although the amount of hair littered about the house varies with each dog. They do not drool as much as larger breeds such as the St. Bernard. With males, the amounts of drool and hair are greater than with the more petite females. However, to prevent superfluous amounts of hair, regular daily grooming is recommended with the breed.

Bernese are very trainable dogs and are all-around people-pleasers. They are extremely loyal and love their humans greatly. The breed has been known to remember the things that bring smiles or laughter to their beloved humans and repeat those actions. These dogs are very sweet, cuddly, and love the great outdoors. Overall, the Bernese Montain Dog is the ideal dog.
